HANOI — Global autonomous aerial vehicle (AAV) pioneer EHang Holdings has officially partnered with Vietnamese aviation authorities and local infrastructure developers to launch Southeast Asia’s first comprehensive electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) commercial sandbox testing program in Hanoi.
The regulatory sandbox framework, authorized by Vietnam’s Ministry of Transport and the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV), establishes designated low-altitude flight corridors across the Red River Delta to validate unmanned passenger transport, emergency medical logistics, and urban aerial tourism.
Inaugural Flight Demonstrations and Low-Altitude Corridors
During the inaugural launch ceremony held at Hanoi’s high-tech corridor, EHang’s flagship EH216-S passenger-carrying autonomous aircraft completed fully automated point-to-point demonstration flights without an onboard pilot. The flights followed pre-programmed algorithmic flight paths managed by a centralized intelligent command-and-control ground station.
The milestone represents a major leap in regional aviation infrastructure, aligning with rapid global technological transformations previously highlighted in PakPulse247 international technology coverage detailing automated flight architecture and advanced aerospace engineering.
Strategic Goals for Urban Mobility and Decarbonization
Vietnamese transport officials emphasized that integrating electric urban air mobility addresses severe ground traffic congestion in metropolitan centers like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City while advancing national carbon neutrality targets.
“Establishing a dedicated testing sandbox allows our regulatory bodies to construct robust air-traffic management standards for autonomous aircraft in real-world conditions,” said a senior CAAV technical director. “Urban air mobility will drastically reduce inter-district transit times and provide green, efficient logistics capabilities.”
Commercial Phasing and Regional Expansion
The pilot program will progress through three structured operational phases over the next twelve months. Initial trials focus on heavy-payload cargo delivery and cross-river medical transport, followed by scenic tourism routes along coastal resort hubs, before culminating in scheduled point-to-point urban passenger commuter routes.
EHang confirmed that upon successful completion of the Hanoi sandbox milestones, the platform will expand operational frameworks to neighboring ASEAN markets seeking scalable low-altitude transport solutions.
