The Supreme Court on Wednesday adjourned the Imran Khan hospital transfer case for three weeks, as proceedings continued over the former prime minister’s medical treatment and earlier directions concerning his transfer from Adiala Jail.
The case was heard by a three-member bench headed by Justice Shahid Waheed. During the proceedings, the court summoned the Attorney General after being informed that the Federal Constitutional Court had sought the record relating to the case.
During an exchange with the Attorney General, Justice Shahid Waheed remarked: “We have complete confidence in you.”
The hearing was subsequently adjourned for three weeks.
Federal Constitutional Court Seeks Case Record
The latest hearing comes a day after the Federal Constitutional Court sought the complete record of cases concerning Imran Khan’s proposed transfer to Shifa International Hospital.
A three-member Federal Constitutional Court bench had called for records from the Supreme Court as well as similar matters pending before high courts while examining petitions involving medical facilities for prisoners.
During Wednesday’s Supreme Court proceedings, Additional Attorney General Rana Asad informed the bench that the Federal Constitutional Court had issued an order seeking the case record.
Justice Shahid Waheed then asked whether the Attorney General was available and subsequently directed that he appear before the court in person.
Supreme Court Had Ordered Transfer to Shifa Hospital
The dispute stems from the Supreme Court’s August 18, 2026 order directing authorities to transfer Imran Khan from Adiala Jail to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad for medical assessment and treatment.
The court had also ordered the formation of a multidisciplinary medical board and directed authorities to provide his complete medical record.
The order additionally provided for weekly family meetings and twice-weekly telephone contact with his sons, while directing that his medical condition should not be used for political activity.
However, Khan was subsequently taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, or PIMS, rather than Shifa International Hospital. The government maintained that the decision was based on security considerations, while Khan’s legal team challenged the move and sought implementation of the Supreme Court’s earlier directions.
Contempt Proceedings Also Part of Legal Dispute
Imran Khan’s sister, Dr Uzma Khan, later moved the Supreme Court with a contempt petition alleging non-compliance with the August 18 order.
The petition was scheduled alongside proceedings concerning Khan’s health, medical treatment and meetings with family members.
With Wednesday’s proceedings now adjourned for three weeks, attention will remain on how the jurisdictional issue involving the Supreme Court and Federal Constitutional Court is addressed and what further directions are issued regarding Imran Khan’s medical treatment.
