Lahore is preparing to roll out a new “Libraries on Wheels” initiative aimed at bringing books and digital learning resources directly to school students across the city.

Under the project, 55 electric vehicles will be provided to the Lahore Education Authority and used as mobile libraries, allowing educational resources to reach schools that may have limited access to dedicated library and digital learning facilities.

The project is expected to begin in the first week of October 2026.

22 Tablets and LED Screen in Each Mobile Library

Each electric mobile library will be equipped with 22 tablets and an LED screen, combining traditional reading resources with technology-based learning.

The tablets will give students access to digital educational material, while the mobile library model will enable books and learning resources to move between schools instead of remaining limited to a single campus.

Charging facilities for the electric vehicles will also be arranged at schools to support their regular operation.

One Mobile Library Expected to Serve Around 100 Schools

According to the project plan, each mobile library vehicle is expected to provide services to approximately 100 schools.

With 55 vehicles planned for the initiative, the programme could significantly expand access to books and digital educational resources across Lahore if the vehicles operate according to their proposed coverage schedules.

The mobile approach is particularly significant for schools where establishing a fully equipped permanent library or digital learning facility may require additional infrastructure.

Pilot Schools to Host Vehicles in Initial Phase

During the initial phase, all 55 electric library vehicles will be stationed at selected pilot schools.

Students from different schools will then be able to benefit from the mobile library services, including access to books, tablets and digital educational content.

The pilot phase will also provide education authorities with an opportunity to assess how effectively the vehicles can serve multiple schools and how students use the combination of physical and digital learning resources.

Focus on Reading and Digital Learning

The Libraries on Wheels project is designed to encourage reading among students while also exposing them to modern digital learning tools.

Instead of treating traditional libraries and technology as separate facilities, the mobile units will bring both formats together in a single learning environment.

For Lahore’s school system, the initiative represents a shift toward taking educational resources directly to students rather than relying entirely on fixed library infrastructure.

Its wider impact, however, will depend on regular vehicle schedules, the quality and variety of books and digital content available, maintenance of the tablets and electric vehicles, and how consistently participating schools are able to use the service.

If implemented as planned, the Libraries on Wheels programme could provide thousands of students across Lahore with more frequent access to reading material and digital learning resources.
