RAWALPINDI — Pakistan security forces repelled a major cross-border infiltration attempt by heavily armed militants along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border in the Kurram tribal district, killing 12 terrorists during an intense tactical engagement, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) confirmed in an official statement on Monday.
The pre-dawn border confrontation unfolded when advanced surveillance outposts detected a large group of terrorists belonging to Fitna al-Khawarij attempting to breach the international border fence under the cover of dense fog and rugged mountainous terrain in upper Kurram.
Tactical Interception Thwarts Large-Scale Infiltration Plot
Alert troops deployed along forward defensive positions swiftly isolated the infiltration party, establishing a comprehensive cordon and preventing the militants from penetrating deeper into populated civilian settlements or launching coordinated ambushes against border posts.
In the ensuing firefight, security forces neutralized 12 infiltrating terrorists, while several others sustained injuries and retreated under fire back across the border. During the fierce gun battle, Lance Naik Muhammad Tariq, a 29-year-old soldier from Abbottabad who fought gallantly, embraced martyrdom after sustaining multiple bullet wounds.
“A large cache of high-grade automatic weapons, night-vision combat scopes, sniper rifles, and heavy ammunition was recovered from the killed terrorists,” the military's media wing stated. “Sanitization operations are being vigorously conducted in the surrounding ridge lines to eliminate any remaining hostile elements in the sector.”
Pakistan Urges Afghan Authorities to Prevent Soil Exploitation
The military reaffirmed that Pakistan's armed forces remain unyielding in their determination to defend territorial integrity and eradicate terrorism from its frontiers. The statement reiterated Pakistan's longstanding call on the interim Afghan administration in Kabul to honor its international commitments and enforce effective border management to prevent militant factions from utilizing Afghan soil for hostile actions against Pakistan.
Local community leaders and tribal elders across Kurram expressed unanimous solidarity with the armed forces, praising the rapid response of border units that averted a potentially catastrophic terrorist offensive in the region.
