LONDON — Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif made financial history on Wednesday by becoming the first Pakistani prime minister to open the official market trading session at the London Stock Exchange (LSE), marking the formal launch of Pakistan’s landmark $3 billion sovereign dual-tranche Eurobond.

The sovereign issuance, which represents Pakistan’s return to international capital markets after an extensive fiscal consolidation period, drew overwhelming demand from institutional fund managers across the United Kingdom, United States, Europe, and the Middle East, with aggregate order books approaching $6 billion.

Ringing the LSE Bell and Market Reception

Accompanied by senior financial officials and key cabinet members, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif rang the opening bell at the LSE headquarters in the City of London, welcoming international investors to participate in Pakistan’s economic revival.

“Today’s milestone reflects the growing global confidence in Pakistan’s macroeconomic stability, fiscal governance, and institutional reform trajectory,” Prime Minister Sharif said in his keynote address. “We are committed to maintaining strict fiscal discipline, fostering private-sector investment, and unlocking our country’s immense economic potential.”

The high-profile issuance builds on ongoing structural reform benchmarks developed under the Pakistan and IMF macroeconomic reform framework, which has stabilized foreign exchange reserves and improved sovereign credit profiles.

Dual-Tranche Sovereign Debt Architecture

The Ministry of Finance structured the $3 billion issuance across two maturity tranches designed to optimize debt servicing obligations and extend the national debt profile:

  • 5-Year Tranche ($1.5 Billion): Geared toward institutional liquidity funds and international commercial banks seeking medium-term yield stability.
  • 10-Year Tranche ($1.5 Billion): Targeted at long-term sovereign wealth funds, pension capital, and global asset management institutions.

Financial analysts noted that the strong oversubscription allowed the debt management office to price both tranches competitively, reducing the overall yield spread compared to previous sovereign bond offerings.

Global Investor Engagement in London

Following the market opening ceremony, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the Pakistani delegation held high-level roundtable discussions with leading global investment executives, sovereign debt portfolio managers, and energy transition financiers at the LSE.

Discussions focused on public-private partnership opportunities in energy, logistics, information technology, and critical mineral development under the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) framework.

Market observers in London and Islamabad described the Eurobond launch as a pivotal validation of Pakistan’s economic stabilization agenda, providing critical non-debt-creating external financing buffers and reinforcing positive sovereign rating outlooks.
