Senior Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader, former federal law minister and sitting Member of the National Assembly Chaudhry Mahmood Bashir Virk has passed away at the age of 89, bringing to an end a decades-long political and parliamentary career closely associated with Gujranwala and the PML-N.

Mahmood Bashir Virk had been unwell for some time and was receiving treatment at a hospital in Lahore, where he passed away on September 11.

His death prompted an outpouring of grief from political leaders, parliamentarians, party workers and supporters, with many remembering him as one of the PML-N’s longstanding and loyal political figures.

In condolence messages following his death, Virk was remembered as a sincere, committed and ideological party colleague whose political and parliamentary services would not be forgotten.

Prayers were also offered for the departed soul and for strength and patience for his family.

Mahmood Bashir Virk Was Serving as NA-77 MNA

At the time of his death, Mahmood Bashir Virk was representing NA-77 Gujranwala-I in the National Assembly.

He won the constituency on a Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz ticket in the 2024 general elections, securing 109,704 votes.

His victory continued a long parliamentary career during which he became one of the most recognisable PML-N politicians from Gujranwala.

Virk was elected to the National Assembly five times during his political career and remained associated with parliamentary politics for decades.

Former Federal Law Minister and Senior Parliamentarian

Mahmood Bashir Virk had also served as Federal Minister for Law and Justice and held several important parliamentary responsibilities during his career.

Most recently, he was serving as chairman of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Law and Justice.

His work in parliament covered legislation, constitutional and legal affairs and matters related to democratic institutions.

National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, while expressing grief over his death, described Virk as an experienced and dedicated parliamentarian who had made valuable contributions to legislation, democratic values, parliamentary supremacy and public welfare.

The Speaker said his death had deprived the National Assembly of a seasoned and active member.

A Long Association With PML-N

Beyond elected office, Mahmood Bashir Virk was widely identified with the PML-N’s political organisation in Gujranwala.

He remained with the party through different political periods and became one of its senior figures in the district.

Following his death, party circles highlighted his loyalty to the PML-N and his long association with its political struggle.

His supporters remembered him not simply as an elected representative but as a politician who maintained a long-term connection with his constituency and party workers.

Gujranwala Loses a Veteran Political Figure

Virk's death is particularly significant for the politics of Gujranwala, where he had remained active for decades.

The city has traditionally been considered an important political stronghold for the PML-N, and Virk was among the senior politicians who helped maintain the party’s electoral presence in the region.

His repeated election to the National Assembly reflected the political base he had developed over the years.

For voters in NA-77, his death also creates the loss of a sitting representative at a time when he continued to hold an active parliamentary role.

Political and Parliamentary Services Remembered

Tributes following Mahmood Bashir Virk’s death have focused heavily on his long experience in parliament and his contribution to legislative affairs.

He was known particularly for his involvement in legal and constitutional matters, an area in which he continued to work through the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Law and Justice.

His political career spanned changing governments, opposition periods and several general elections.

Despite those changes, he remained a prominent figure within the PML-N and continued to contest elections from Gujranwala.

Condolences Pour In

Political leaders and parliamentarians have expressed sorrow over Mahmood Bashir Virk’s death and extended condolences to his family.

The National Assembly Speaker paid tribute to his political, parliamentary and social services, saying his contribution would be remembered for a long time.

Within the PML-N, he is being remembered as a committed and loyal colleague whose association with the party extended over many years.

His passing marks the end of a lengthy parliamentary career and leaves a significant gap in both PML-N politics in Gujranwala and the National Assembly’s senior parliamentary ranks.

Mahmood Bashir Virk leaves behind a political legacy built around electoral politics, parliamentary service and a long association with Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz.
