ISLAMABAD — United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres arrived in Islamabad on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, commencing a three-day official visit focused on regional security dynamics, multilateral diplomacy, and climate disaster resilience.

Upon his arrival at Islamabad International Airport, the UN chief was received by Acting Foreign Secretary Ambassador Nabeel Munir alongside senior diplomatic officials. Guterres was subsequently welcomed at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, upon whose official invitation the visit is taking place.

High-Level Bilateral Agenda in Islamabad

During the visit spanning October 6 to 8, Guterres is scheduled to hold extensive consultations with Pakistan’s top civilian and military leadership, including President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, and Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir.

Discussions will center on pressing global and regional developments, including Pakistan’s active diplomatic positioning in Middle Eastern de-escalation, multilateral counter-terrorism cooperation, the situation in Afghanistan, and unresolved peace issues concerning Jammu and Kashmir in light of United Nations Security Council resolutions.

The mission builds upon recent bilateral discussions held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, where Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif urged decisive multilateral action on regional disputes and climate adaptation.

Reviewing Disaster Resilience and UNMOGIP Operations

The Secretary-General is also scheduled to visit the headquarters of the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) in Rawalpindi, where he will receive operational briefings on ceasefire monitoring along the Line of Control.

Additionally, Guterres will visit the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in Islamabad. Officials will review progress made since the catastrophic 2022 super floods, examining the integration of Pakistan’s National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC) with global early warning systems and climate-proofing infrastructure initiatives.

Foreign Office spokespersons reaffirmed that Pakistan deeply values the United Nations’ partnership in fostering sustainable development, advancing climate justice for vulnerable nations, and upholding international law across South Asia.
