The Punjab Safe Cities Authority has launched a plan to extend its digital surveillance network to 98 tehsils at an estimated cost of Rs16 billion, according to a report published on September 25.
Dawn reported that the proposal includes 10,000 additional cameras and would extend the network towards 7,602 union councils. The report said safe-city operations are already functioning in nearly 40 cities.
Expansion planned beyond major cities
The proposed phase would take the system to tehsil level. Punjab Safe Cities Authority information describes its wider mandate as integrated command, control and communication systems for public safety, traffic management and emergency response.
The authority's public material says its systems use surveillance and analytics alongside services such as emergency response and e-challan management. The new project has been reported as a planned expansion; its full rollout timetable and procurement details were not set out in the reports reviewed.
Questions of implementation and oversight
As with other large public-technology projects, the scale, cost and privacy safeguards will be key issues to follow as implementation proceeds. This report does not treat projected outcomes as completed results.
